Recently, a new hope has emerged in the field of cancer research in the form of hydrogen therapy. Professor Giovanni Brandi and Dr Simona Tavolari, renowned experts from the University of Bologna, have looked at the results of both pre-clinical and clinical studies that suggest great potential for the use of hydrogen therapy in the treatment of cancer.

Hydrogen, the simplest chemical element, is present in the atmosphere in non-toxic concentrations and is produced in the human body from uneaten carbohydrates through the anaerobic metabolism of certain bacteria in the gut. Recent studies have revealed its significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, opening up new possibilities in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer.

Cancer cells differ from normal cells by their altered redox environment, which includes higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These unstable molecules can lead to various pathological conditions such as acute and chronic inflammation, gene instability and promotion of tumor growth.

Traditional antioxidants such as vitamins C and E have not achieved the expected results in clinical trials. In contrast, hydrogen, with its ability to penetrate cellular organelles and selectively neutralize hydroxyl radicals, appears to be a promising alternative.

The first studies dating back to 1975 demonstrated the efficacy of hydrogen therapy in mouse models of carcinoma. Subsequent studies have confirmed its antitumour effect in different types of tumours and with different routes of administration, such as inhalation and drinking hydrogen-enriched solutions.

The mechanisms of action of hydrogen include regulation of ROS levels in cells and increased expression of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, hydrogen reduces tissue damage caused by inflammation, which contributes to its anticancer effects.

Although data on long-term toxicity are still lacking, hydrogen therapy appears to be safe and has the potential to selectively target cancer cells with minimal side effects.

Despite the need for further clinical trials, the results so far are promising and suggest that hydrogen therapy could be an effective approach in cancer treatment.
