Range up to 1,000 km. Total weight 65 tonnes. Fueling time 15 minutes. No emissions. That's a Volvo hydrogen truck – Volvo Trucks has begun final testing of these trucks, specifically for long-haul transport.

Volvo Trucks already offers battery electric trucks and trucks that use renewable fuels such as biogas. In the second half of this decade, Volvo Trucks will add a third CO2-neutral option to its range - hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks.

"We have been developing this technology for several years now and it is great to see the first trucks successfully running on the test track. The combination of battery electric and fuel cell electric drive will allow our customers to completely eliminate CO2 emissions from their trucks, regardless of the transport task," says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

The fuel cell generates its own electricity from hydrogen directly in the vehicle, instead of being charged from an external source. The only by-product emitted is water vapour.

"We expect the supply of green hydrogen* to increase significantly over the next few years as many industries depend on CO2 reduction. However, we can't wait to decarbonise transport, we are already behind schedule. So my clear message to all transport companies is to start the journey today with battery electricity, biogas and other available options," says Roger Alm.

* Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources such as wind, water and sun.
