The fact that hydrogen has an anti-inflammatory effect in the body is already fairly well known. But Chinese scientists have gone even further. They have used nanotechnology-based implants to deliver hydrogen into the body. The method could help with problems related to ageing and diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Aging and some diseases are often associated with a process called cellular senescence, or biological aging, when cells stop dividing and release inflammatory substances.
„The microenvironment of senescence, which causes persistent inflammation and loss of intrinsic regenerative capacity, is a major barrier to effective tissue repair in the elderly,“ the researchers wrote.
This creates a physical environment that hinders tissue repair, accelerates aging and can lead to bone problems in the elderly, making fracture healing more difficult.
However, existing drugs developed by scientists to stop cellular senescence have limitations, cause side effects and have limited effectiveness. Interestingly, hydrogen molecules have emerged as a promising, safe and broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory agent due to their ability to neutralise harmful radicals.
The intersection of nanotechnology and hydrogen therapy
The small but powerful implant delivers hydrogen much better than usual, similar to drinking hydrogen-rich water or inhaling hydrogen gas. It drives hydrogen delivery incredibly fast - up to 40,000 times more efficiently than conventional methods.
The small implant is ingeniously designed to release hydrogen consistently for one week. The team conducted preclinical tests on 24-month-old laboratory mice, the equivalent of a 70-year-old human. The implant, which acts as a catalyst, proved effective in restoring bone, but also had results in rejuvenating cells.
The new approach altered cellular infrastructure, reduced inflammation and improved cell functioning. The discovery gives hope for combating the problems that come with aging and is a major step forward in the search for new treatments, according to the researchers.
