Up to 500 gigawatts of hydropower by 2050 is promised by a new project called Copenhagen Energy Islands. The large-scale offshore energy centres plan to use green hydrogen as an energy carrier, creating synergies between electricity and hydrogen production.
The offshore wind industry is expected to have as much as 500 gigawatts of hydroelectricity available over the next 25 years by 2050. The question is where all this power will go. A new project called Copenhagen Energy Islands, with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners as the main investor, has an ambitious plan to build a network of ten offshore green hydrogen power plants, each with a capacity of around 10 gigawatts. In total, this would mean 100 gigawatts of renewable energy.
This bold move brings together investors from Europe and North America to create large-scale offshore energy hubs. The Copenhagen Energy Islands project aims to effectively integrate offshore wind energy into global energy systems through innovative technologies and scale. The ambitions associated with this project represent a step towards the use of green hydrogen as a key part of the energy mix.
Power-to-Gas is becoming a new way to harness the growing offshore wind power. Copenhagen Energy Islands plans to use green hydrogen as an energy carrier, creating synergies between electricity and hydrogen production. In doing so, they aim to solve transmission problems and enable the development of multi-purpose offshore energy farms with lower transmission costs.
